Stay safe and happy when you shop online with advice from IMRG and practical help from ISIS, the e-retail industry trust scheme that has over 1,000 accredited e-retailers:

Millions of people enjoy shopping online for the convenience of being able to buy whenever they like, the huge choice available, rich information and significant savings that the internet offers. But e-retail is a young, fast-growing industry that is changing all the time, so whether you are a newcomer to internet shopping, or an old hand, it's always a good idea to confirm that you are up to speed on the latest safety recommendations.

Nobody knows more about shopping safely online than IMRG, which has represented the e-retail industry since 1990, and works hard to ensure that online shoppers are treated fairly. We not only provide free advice for online shoppers, we also the run the ISIS (Internet Shopping Is Safe) trust scheme, with over 1,000 great shops where you can buy online with confidence. More than 200 ISIS merchants have also signed up to the IDIS scheme (www.imrg.org/idis), indicating confidence that their delivery arrangements are excellent too.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR SHOPPING ONLINE

1. All of your usual shopping rights apply online: see www.dti.gov.uk/consumers

2. Know who you're dealing with: get the seller's contact details and postal address

3. Be aware of terms and conditions: check payment and delivery details

4. Keep records of what you order

5. EU Law protects you against fraudulent use of your payment card in EU transactions: credit cards give you extra protection

6. Only give your payment card details over a secure connection, and never by email: never disclose your PIN number to anyone, and never send it over the internet

7. You have at least 7 days to cancel an order and request a refund from an EU retailer

8. Check your payment card statement carefully: you have at least 90 days to report a suspect transaction

9. When you buy goods online from outside the EU: - you are an importer and may be liable to pay any Customs Duty and VAT; - err on the side of caution as it may be difficult to seek redress if problems arise

10. If you have a problem, contact the seller then, if you need to, the payment company, local Trading Standards Office and any 'trustmark' organisation the seller is registered with.

OVER 1,000 SAFE ISIS-ACCREDITED E-SHOPS

Always look out for the ISIS (Internet Shopping Is Safe) and IDIS (Internet Delivery Is Safe) logos, which indicate that the shop is accredited by the e-retail industry trust scheme (a genuine logo will always link through to an accreditation certificate for that particular organisation).

ISIS now has more than 1,000 accredited retailers who are standing by with a fantastic range of goods to make your shopping experience the best and most relaxing ever. Most of us are used to the idea of buying a book or CD via the internet, but now people are buying everything online - groceries, cars, houses, holidays, kitchens, flowers - you name it, our ISIS-accredited e-retailers have got it!

You can shop with confidence with ISIS-accredited shops because they have all committed to the ISIS Code of Practice which requires them to trade online in a manner that is LEGAL, DECENT, FAIR, HONEST and TRUTHFUL. As part of the accreditation process, the ISIS management team checks the BUSINESS, VAT and DATA PROTECTION REGISTRATIONS of every applying retailer, together with their TERMS & CONDITIONS.

ISIS-accreditation cannot, of course, guarantee that an e-retailer's service will be problem-free, however, it minimises the likelihood of problems occurring and, in the rare event that things do go wrong, the ISIS team will be standing by to help resolve issues, quickly and efficiently.

IDIS-accredited merchants must be ISIS-accredited and are additionally required to ensure to their best ability that their delivery services are convenient and reliable, and that they provide clear and timely delivery information, and helpful support if problems arise.

SHOP EARLY

SHOP EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS BEFORE STOCKS RUN LOW! With 25 million people shopping online at Christmas, expect inventory of the most popular lines to disappear fast. So to maximise the range of goods available to you, and to avoid disappointment, shop as early as you can.

For those who don't manage to shop in good time, some retailers are making special arrangements for guaranteed deliveries right up to the last minute - but always check details carefully, and bear in mind that if there's a blizzard, nothing can get through!

ONLINE SHOPPING GUIDELINES

Don't worry! Shopping online is safe if you use your common sense and always check the terms and conditions of offers. When you buy online from a European retailer, you have even more consumers' rights than when you buy in a shop.

Make sure your shopping will be delivered in time! Good merchants will advise you of delivery time scales and guarantee a delivery time frame. Even so, it makes sense to shop early and build in some extra time to avoid disappointment. Many merchants will let you arrange delivery to an alternative address (as opposed to the credit card billing address) such as your workplace, a store, a Post Office, or directly to the recipient of your gift - saving you even more time.

All payment cards - credit, debit and pre-pay - will protect you in terms of the payment itself, and credit cards also offer you additional protection in the case of a disputed transaction. Make sure that you are fully aware of any payment commitments you are entering into, including whether you are instructing a single payment or a series of payments.

Only give your payment card details over a secure connection (see 'security features' below), and never by email.

Be aware of the security features available both on the retailer's website and on your own browser. Only trade with companies that have an encryption certificate and use secure transaction technology. During checkout, look for a closed padlock symbol at the bottom of the screen and / or the site address changing from http:// to https:// which indicate that the communication between you and the retailer is encrypted and therefore confidential. While you are on a 'secure' page (i.e. when the padlock is visible), you can right-click to view security information about the page. But remember that website security depends on ALL of the processes the retailer puts in place to protect you. If in doubt, there are always plenty of other great online stores to visit.

The Government and Industry recently launched the 'Get Safe Online' campaign which provides consumers and businesses with hints and tips on safe use of the internet, and how to protect your PC. The website, at www.getsafeonline.org is a valuable source of information and is regularly updated.

Never ever disclose your credit card's PIN to anyone, including people claiming to be from your bank or the police, and NEVER send it over the internet.

3D Secure is a new method of increasing security online. Visa and Mastercard are operating a scheme whereby you can register a user name and password for your Credit Card. Merchants operating within the scheme will display Verified By Visa and Mastercard Secure Code logo's and will request your user name and password when purchasing through their website. This provides an additional level of security for consumers but please be wary of any email or website requesting this information, particularly outside of the purchasing process. If in doubt, contact the retailer. In addition, Visa and Mastercard display lists of compliant merchants on their websites.

Always keep a record of every online transaction as proof of order, ideally including the retailer's terms and conditions, returns policy and contact details. Always print off a copy of the order summary page as well as the order confirmation page, which may only provide the order number with no specific details of goods ordered.

When you purchase goods from retailers overseas, err on the side of caution, as it may be difficult to seek redress if problems arise. And remember that YOU are responsible for ensuring that such transactions are legal.

Consider carefully offers to send you promotional offers by email as you could find yourself inundated by irrelevant information. You may wish to check privacy policies, which should be clearly indicated on the site and state that the personal and financial details you provide will not be sold on or shared with others without your prior consent.

Look for 'trustmark' validation. There are a number of organisations offering consumers certain guarantees or 'trustmarks' that member merchants' stores are operating responsibly. Sites that register with trustmark organisations need to follow guidelines regarding their customer service. Some examples of trustmark organisations are ISIS, IMRG Hallmark, TRUSTe, TrustUK. The absence of a 'trustmark', however, does not indicate a lack of trustworthiness.

You have at least seven days from the day after receipt to return unwanted goods by and request a refund when you buy from a European retailer, by law. Ampalian Jewellery offers 30 days (or longer at Christmas). Returned items must be unused, in good condition and retain their original packaging. Agree in advance with the retailer that you are going to do this and then return the goods in accordance with the retailer's instructions. If the fault is theirs (wrong item despatched or goods are faulty), they should refund the return postage, but if you simply decide you don't want the item, expect to foot the shipping bill yourself.

If you have a problem, contact the company you ordered from. If they do not give you satisfaction, contact your credit card company. If you are still not happy, contact your local Trading Standards Office and any 'trustmark' organisation the shop is registered with.

Always check your credit card statement carefully. Raise any discrepancies with the retailer concerned in the first instance, as soon as you can. You have at least 90 days to report any transaction you are not happy with to your credit card company, who will usually refund all of your money.

For the more technically minded, if you are uncertain about a website, you can double-check that the domain name in the web address you are visiting is registered to the company it should be. You can do this through Nominet (http://www.nominet.org.uk/whois) for a .co.uk firm or Network Solutions (http://www.networksolutions.com/whois) for a .com firm.

Be wary of opening files attached to emails, as they may contain computer viruses. If in doubt, email or phone the sender to check the file is OK before opening it. Always use a virus protection program to protect your computer.

You can easily block out offensive material, making the internet safe for children to search. Popular filters include Lycos searchguard, searchopolis, Ask Jeeves for Kids, and Altavista family filter.
